VISIONS OF SANCTUARY

Life is transitory.Through a microscope, we can witness how our cells are constantly regenerating and changing. At dusk, the sun gives its turn to the moon, at dawn the moon to the sun. There are no shortage of reminders of the inevitable passage of time.

The one constant we experience in life is change. From the time we are born, we go through many stages that invariably pass. Because of this, I believe that we are in a constant state of fascination and fear of that which is beyond our control. Nowhere is this more evident than in our perceptions of death. Since the dawn of mankind, the transition to the afterlife has stirred the most fear and fascination. Why else would the rituals surrounding our passage into the unknown always hold the highest importance
in every civilization?

The cemetery is the bridge between the world of the living and the dead. The mausoleum symbolizes the end of this journey and the start of the next. They are infused with the deepest of human essences: love, suffering, loss, pride, and respect. They are also a tribute to having existed. They were built to honor one’s time here on earth.

Burial grounds are a sanctuary that we visit to remember our loved ones; at the same time they serve as a mirror to confront our own impermanence, the ephemeral nature of our own lives.
